Nicholas Stelmack (backstroke), Hunter Weyrich (breaststroke), Virginia Griswold (butterfly) and Julia Nichols (freestyle) set a state record of 1:52.59.

Six local Tallulah Falls School swim team members competed at the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association State Swim Meet held in Tifton on July 16.

According to coach Susan Nichols, the GRPA state swim meet is the final competition for swimmers who have achieved a qualifying position at local and district level meets.

The mixed medley team of Nicholas Stelmack (backstroke), Hunter Weyrich (breaststroke), Virginia Griswold (butterfly) and Julia Nichols (freestyle) set a state record of 1:52.59 when they won the event, Nichols said.

“Every TFS swimmer made the podium in their individual age division events, and met or set new personal performance records,” she said.

John Nichols is the state champion in both the 50-yard freestyle and butterfly. Hunter Weyrich is the state champion in the 50-yard backstroke and placed fourth in the breaststroke. Nick Stelmack was the runner-up in the backstroke and eighth in the 100-yard freestyle.

Virginia Griswold earned fourth place in the backstroke and sixth in the 100-yard Individual medley race. Julia Nichols was fourth in the 50-yard butterfly and sixth in the 50-yard freestyle. Norah Griswold was eighth in the 50-yard butterfly.

“These TFS student athletes compete in multiple sports during the school year and swim during the summer,” Nichols said. “Each season they raise the performance expectations through dedicated practice.”

The upcoming TFS high school swim season starts October 17 and is setting up to be the most successful swim season in TFS history, she added.
