Historic bell in place to establish new traditions

A recent addition to the middle school campus will ring in new traditions for the Tallulah Falls School community.

Installed August 4, a circa 1902 bell is now in place in front of the newly-opened student activity center.

With its placement in the center courtyard, it will stand ready for ringing in celebration after athletic victories and to commemorate special occasions.

“We plan to establish new traditions with the bell,” said President and Head of School Larry Peevy. “It will become part of our school culture.”

The bell’s pedigree is high profile. Forged in 1902 by the famed Meneely Bell Company in Troy, New York, the TFS bell was first used as part of a 10-bell installation in a church in Taunton, Massachusetts.

The Meneely Bell Company, which closed in 1952, was well known for quality, with its bells installed at Independence Hall, Dartmouth College and as part of the carillon at the Steeplechase Park at Coney Island. Most of the bells forged at Meneely were installed at churches, schools, colleges and universities.
