Lunch career series continues with state representative

Tallulah Falls School continued its series of lunch and learn events on Oct. 23, with District 10 State Representative Terry Rogers, also a member of the TFS Board of Directors.

The series is designed to connect upper school students to career professionals, according to Upper School Academic Dean Kim Popham.

Rogers provided an overview of the legislative process and answered questions about his educational and career path. He told students you can learn something from everyone you meet in life and to strive always to be kind to others.

"After talking with this group of students, I realized how driven and focused many of them were. I've gone all across the state with the Rural Development Council and heard about the lack of soft skills in our emerging workforce," Rogers said. "That's certainly not the case with the students at TFS. I was so impressed with their communication and soft skills; it's obvious that TFS instills a strong work ethic. It's unusual to speak with young people so focused on the future. One thing became abundantly clear; I wish we could clone these young people all across the state."

Student feedback:

Senior Marshall Williams, Toccoa

He is a friendly man who is willing to take the time to understand anyone who gives him the chance to do so. He knows all about being a self-made man, and that is something that I respect. I enjoyed having lunch with Rep. Rogers, and I learned a lot about the personal aspect of being a member at the state level of the government.

Senior Reeves Cody, Cornelia

Recently, I had the privilege of eating lunch with Rep. Terry Rogers. He talked to us a little about his line of work, but he spent most of his time listening to us. His ability to listen and genuinely care for what we have to say is a true testament to Rep. Rogers' character. The selflessness that he demonstrates every day is why he epitomizes what it means to be a public servant. I was so thankful to get to know him a little better, and I hope the opportunity arises again sometime soon.

Senior Zach Corwin, Baldwin

First, I'd like to take the opportunity to thank Rep. Rogers for finding time out of his busy schedule to come to talk to us. Rep. Rogers was personable and not just answered all the questions I had for him but asked me questions about my plans and goals. I admire Rep. Rogers and how amid all the corruption and drama in the government, we have a public servant who does care about the people he represents.

Junior Brinson Hall, Mt. Airy

I am pleased that Rep. Rogers came to speak to us because it gave me great insight into a possible career path. He told us about how he knew he wanted to serve the public but wasn't sure how to. He then got involved in the state legislature, and it proved to be a way to serve and do a job he loves, which was interesting to me. He also asked us questions and tried to help us develop an idea for our future, which I appreciated.

Sophomore Evan Prince, Demorest

It was nice to have someone like Rep. Rogers take the time to come and speak to students in such a small group setting. What impressed me was the fact that he promoted sports and academics when he talked to us. Usually, people put one ahead of the other. I think it says a lot about a person when they set aside time, out of an already busy schedule, to talk with young people.
