TFS freshman passes first-round All-State band audition

A Tallulah Falls School freshman passed the first audition for All-State Band.

Due to the pandemic, "Amy" Kexin Ma of Cumming auditioned on flute via video.

According to music teacher Jill Hunter, auditioning for All-State Band requires a great deal of preparation. Students must perform eight major scales from memory, and the chromatic scale on the full range of the instrument.

“Students then have to perform two difficult etudes and are scored on tone, technique, rhythm, articulation, dynamics, phrasing and interpretation,” Hunter said. “I am very proud of Kexin’s hard work and dedication. Her high score is evidence she is a very talented musician.”

Ma will participate in the All-District Honor Band at a later date and will then audition for All-State Band on Feb. 27.

TFS typically has several students represented in All-State Chorus and District Honor Choir; however, those events were canceled this year due to COVID.

“The pandemic has taken a toll on many music programs, so I was very excited that Kexin wanted to audition for All-State Band. This is definitely a win for our Fine Arts Department,” Hunter added.
