TFS Pit Vipers seize national ranking

In the first quarter of the 2021 Kansas City BBQ (KCBS) season, the TFS Pit Vipers competition barbecue team is ranked No. 1 in ribs and No. 3 in chicken in the country.

The Pit Vipers finished first in chicken, second in ribs and first overall at the Rufus Teague Throwdown held March 19-20 in Summerville, SC. In the past three competitions, the Vipers have finished in the top spot at least once in every category (chicken, ribs and pork), according to Head Pitmaster Tom Tilley.

“We are doing very well at this time. We have great recipes with young pitmasters who can cook,” said Tilley. “I am super proud of these  kids.”

The Pit Vipers included freshmen Brooke Hayes of Cornelia, Matthew Wolfe of Clarkesville, Joel Bourlet of Tallulah Falls and Marc Crotta of Cornelia. Additional Pit Vipers are seniors Ty Tilley and Cainan Yaskiewicz of Highlands, NC  and eighth-graders Teryk Tilley and Zach Freeman of Toccoa.

“This is so awesome that we are nationally ranked,” Freeman said. “It is very hard work and very rewarding.”
