Lady Indians tennis set for first-ever state tournament appearance

Teams enter a season with goals in mind of what they’d like to accomplish. Have a winning record – check. Rack up 10 wins – check. Make the state tournament – check. Make history – check.

2021 has been nothing short of spectacular for the Lady Indians, as they have had a historic run. After winning six of the last seven matches played, the girls have notched the program’s first-ever state playoff appearance.

To that end, the Lady Indians are the #3 seed out of Region 8-A Private after beating both Athens Christian in the opening round of the region tourney and Athens Academy in the #3/#4 seed match. A loss to George Walton in between was the only hiccup in a monthlong stretch of dominance.

TFS set a program record of 10 wins against 6 losses, and travel in the opening round to Holy Innocents, the #2-seed from Region 5-A Private.

So far this season, the girls have been led by #1 singles player Maggie Peacock (6-8 record), #2 singles player Gigi Welch (11-5) and #3 singles player Evette Corwin (11-5). The doubles combo of Ashli Webb and Sophie Herrera are 9-6 overall at #1, while #2 doubles Cassidy Hayes and Annabelle Jackson are 10-3. Others such as Ava Wehrstein, Sussie Sun, Reese Wilson and Claire Bellamy have contributed to the success as well.

The tennis team is set for a send-off on Tuesday at 11:15 as they embark on their first-ever state playoff appearance.
