TFS Pit Vipers finish 10th at recent competition

The Tallulah Falls School Pit Vipers traveled to Kennesaw Aug. 20-21 to compete in the Pigs & Peaches BBQ Festival, finishing 10th overall.

The Pit Vipers have finished in the top 10 in every Kansas City Barbecue Society/Georgia BBQ Championship competition since starting in 2018, according to Pitmaster Tom Tilley.

This consistency, Tilley said, has propelled the team to tie for the No. 1 ranking in the GBC.

Awards were presented as follows:

KCBS Chicken, 12th
KCBS Pork, 1st (record-breaking score of 180)
KCBS Ribs, 17th
KCBS Overall, 10th
KCBS Dessert 6th (Peach Butterfinger Candy Bar Cake made by Lily Turpin)
KCBS “Anything Butt,” 6th (bacon-wrapped lobster and shrimp)

“I am so proud of these kids,” Tilley said. “We had two perfect 180 scores in back-to-back competitions.”

Pit Viper team members include freshman Zach Freeman, freshman Jake Owensby, sophomore Marc Crotta, sophomore Matthew Wolfe, sophomore Joel Bourlet, sophomore Brooke Hayes, freshman Teryk Tilley and recent graduate AJ Hayes.

“The pork box looked amazing; it was the best we have ever done,” Hayes added.

The Vipers next compete on Sept. 24 in Calhoun at the Boogie & Blues Festival.
