MS basketball ends regular season with sweep over Rabun Gap

On a night that Tallulah Falls honored its eighth grade basketball players and cheerleaders in their final home game, both the girls and boys secured wins over rivals Rabun Gap. The Lady Indians won 17-14, while the Indians took a 32-18 victory.

Lady Indians

The Lady Indians won 17-14, and scored the first 11 to take a large lead in the first half. TFS won the first quarter 10-0, as Charlotte Stafford had 6 points in the first. Josie Plaisted's mid-range bucket and LB Kafsky's free throws helped get the girls up 11-0 early in the second.

Rabun Gap finally got on the board with 1:49 to go in the half, and TFS led 11-2 going into the break. The visitors began to go on a run, and used a 10-0 run to pull within 11-10 before Stafford had a long jumper to end the drought for TFS.

In the fourth, Plaisted had a short-range basket to give a 5-point cushion to the lead, but Rabun Gap again cut it to one at 15-14 with 1:05 to play. Kafsky hit a pair of free throws to go back up 17-14 with 40 seconds remaining, and the defense held on despite Rabun Gap having the ball for a last opportunity to tie.

Stafford notched 8 points and 5 steals, while Kafsky had 5 points and 5 steals. Plaisted had 4 points, and Emily Cai had 11 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists. The Lady Indians finished the season on a 2-game win streak, ending with a 5-7 record.

Indians

The Indians earned a second straight win in a 32-18 final Thursday night at home over Rabun Gap. It was slow-going early on, as Rabun Gap took a 3-point lead on a triple before Bryson Perdue got a bucket to go on a second-chance effort. After Rabun Gap went up 5-2, Ethan Wheeler's basket made it 5-4 to close the first.

In the second, the Indians continued to play catch-up, as Asa Popham had a bucket before Macade Huff ripped off 6 straight points, even giving TFS a brief 12-11 lead. However, the visitors led 15-12 heading into the halftime break.

The boys came out determined in the second half, and used a 16-0 run that spanned the third quarter (12-0 run for TFS), and bled into the fourth. Wheeler had the first couple of baskets in the second half before Huff went a fantastic run. He accounted for the next 14 points for the Indians, slashing his way to the hoop and finishing hard at the rim. By the end of his run, it was 28-15 in favor of the Indians.

Overall, TFS outscored Rabun Gap 20-3 in the second half to claim the win, and more importantly, secure a spot in the conference championship game Saturday. Huff led the attack with 18 points, adding 5 rebounds, 5 steals, and an assist. Wheeler had 10 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals, and 2 assists, while both Perdue and Popham had 2 points each. Perdue also had 5 boards and 4 blocks.

The Indians are now 9-3 overall, and play Saturday at Towns County for the conference championship. TFS won it last season, and look to defend the title.

5th Quarter

The boys teams agreed to a 5-minute, pregame "5th Quarter" with a running clock to get others more time on the court. In the abbreviated action, the Indians outscored Rabun Gap 6-1. Jack Green had 4 points, including a 3-pointer, and added an assist. Ethan Phasavang had 2 points and an assist.
