Midmester Takes Students Beyond the Classroom

Midmester Takes Students Beyond the Classroom

Midmester is in full swing at TFS, with students spending the week traveling, exploring new interests and learning through experiences far beyond the classroom.

Across the country and around the world, TFS students are hiking through the breathtaking landscapes of Yellowstone, navigating the bustling streets of New York City, encountering exotic wildlife in Costa Rica and exploring the wonders of space in Florida.

In Costa Rica, Spanish teacher Matthew Crotta shared highlights from the trip.

“We woke up to monsoon-type rains,” Crotta said. “It didn't stop three dedicated runners from going out for a 3K run, while I attempted a hike with Derartu, Stella and Katherine.”

After breakfast, the group visited a local elementary school, where students were welcomed with songs and dances. For Crotta, the most meaningful part of the visit was watching TFS students connect with the children.

Later, students visited a butterfly farm, where they encountered insects, sloths, a boa and red-eyed tree frogs. The day ended with fruit, a fruit drink and Costa Rican coffee, followed by a nighttime hike through the Tirimbina Rainforest, where students discovered a variety of creatures along the trail.

While some students are traveling, Midmester also gives students the opportunity to pursue interests and explore potential career paths through a variety of specialized courses and experiences.

Students are baking cakes, constructing miniature houses, completing driver’s education and lifeguarding training, participating in job-shadowing experiences and visiting colleges.

In Mrs. Barraco’s biology experience, students are getting hands-on experience with environmental science and biotechnology. The Environmental Benthic Bioassessment and DNA class has been digesting DNA with enzymes and conducting gel electrophoresis as they investigate biological processes in the laboratory.

In The World of Miniatures class, students are taking on the roles of architects and designers, creating detailed miniature structures using professional materials. They are learning techniques including scaling, realistic weathering and structural assembly while building their own miniature worlds.

Another group of students traveled to Savannah, Georgia, visiting the Savannah College of Art and Design. There, students are exploring industrial design and connecting with SCAD students who have pursued careers in fields ranging from fashion and film production to directing.

The creative work began before the students even left campus. In preparation for the trip, students created collaborative artworks inspired by Rorschach inkblot tests. The project gave them an opportunity to practice communication and collaboration.

Whether they are exploring a rainforest, visiting a college campus, conducting a science experiment or building a miniature world, TFS students are making the most of Midmester.

Though the experience lasts only one week, Midmester offers students countless opportunities to explore, discover and experience something new.
