JV splits in Tuesday action at home

The JV volleyball team earned a Tuesday night split at home, taking a 2-0 win over Athens Christian before a 2-0 loss to George Walton.

"We came out and played very confidently against a tall and talented Athens Christian JV squad," says coach Matt Crotta.

Against Athens Christian, it was Marissa Gergeni who got the team started off with a run of 8 points thanks to excellent serving. Julianne Shirley followed suit with a service run of 8 to give TFS a 17-2 lead in the first set. The Lady Indians took the first set 25-5. TFS still pulled out a win for the second set 25-20 despite having missed 12 serves.

"Tonight, we saw some of the best serving and some of the worst serving from the girls that we have seen this season," adds Crotta. "Thankfully, they played great defense, made great passes and converted on excellent setting from Carol Dunlap and Marissa Gergeni."

After coming off a win over Athens Christian, the girls faced a very talented George Walton team for their second match of the evening. The Lady Indians played very well in both sets but had difficulties finishing against the Bulldogs' polished back row defense. Cristina Rodenas led the team with kills from the outside hitting position followed by setter Dunlap. TFS lost in two sets, 18-25 and 17-25.

"I am so proud of the way the girls played against such a disciplined and talented GW team tonight," states Crotta. "I was very happy with their organization on the court, their communication and their teamwork. Despite the loss, our girls played great and they will continue to improve their individual skills in order to take down George Walton the next time we meet."

The girls are now 6-7 overall and 2-2 in area matches.
