Lower school students get to put their curious minds to work with several opportunities in the arts. Fourth and fifth-graders get hands-on experience in visual arts, theatre (stagecraft), radio play, and more.

Water splashing, metal pans clanging, plastic bags crinkling, tape ripping, and boxes crunching come together as the sound effects for the fifth-grade radio play, “Stone Soup.” As our fourth and fifth graders fine-tune their creative pursuits, we engage their curious minds.

The fourth and fifth grade art exploratories introduces multiple elements from visual arts, music, theatre, handwork, and movement. “It is a laboratory for discovery and expression through imitation, experimentation, and personal expression,” said Director of Performing Arts Jonathan Roberts.

The fifth grade drama class also investigates character development and performance through the creation of sock puppets. Each student creates their own puppet and gives it a personality. Students put together scripts with silly jokes, fun voices, and unique characters. “It is an excellent opportunity for students to work together and challenge themselves,” said drama teacher Carrie Layer.

Exploratories & Fine Arts

Lower school students take physical education and fine arts classes as part of their exploratory activities. This is a favorite time of day for students as they engage in sports activities or study artists, musicians, and playwrights. During exploratories, you might find our fourth graders playing volleyball or kickball or matching emotions to their drawings of concentric circles during a study on artist Wassily Kandinsky.
