Athens Christian walks off twice to steal region title from TFS

Tallulah Falls entered Friday needing to win one of two games against Athens Christian to claim the first-ever region championship. Both games saw The #6-ranked Eagles win in the final at-bat to claim the region crown. TFS lost 4-3 in eight innings in the opener and 6-5 in the nightcap.

GAME 1

The opening contest went four scoreless frames before the Indians struck first with a two-run fifth on a base hit by Danny Grant. Athens Christian retaliated with a run in their half. TFS got that run back in the sixth to go up 3-1, and were three outs away from the win. The Eagles got a double and capitalized on an error to scratch across a pair to tie it up and go to extras. A walkoff single came with two outs in the eighth.

Chase Pollock went six strong innings, allowing one unearned run and striking out six against just five hits and two walks. Cole Bonitatibus took the loss in relief. BJ Carver had a pair of hits, while Grant had two RBI.

GAME 2

The Indians got it going early with a run in the first coming from an Ashton Roache double. Athens Christian responded immediately with two. TFS in the third got an RBI triple by Grant, followed by the go-ahead sac fly by Diego Gonzalez. One more in the fourth made it a 4-2 lead. It appeared to be in the bag when Gonzalez had another sacrifice fly in the sixth to push the advantage to 5-2. The Eagles mounted an unlikely comeback in the final frame, scoring four times to walk it off and win 6-5.

Bonitatibus got a no-decision on four innings with eight strikeouts. Andrew Skvarka went the final 2.2 innings and gave up four earned runs on seven hits and two walks. Chris Waldron had two hits and two runs, while Roache and Carver had two hits each also.

The Indians are now 19-9 on the season, and finish as the Region Runner-Up in 8-A DI.
