MS Indians grind out win over Highlands

The TFS middle school boys basketball team used a big second quarter run to take a lead and secure a 49-30 win over visiting Highlands on Monday evening.

It was a low-scoring first quarter, as the Indians held a slim 7-6 lead thanks for a nice basket by Elijah Barker and a 3-pointer by Macade Huff. In the second quarter, the Indians launched a 13-0 run, which included trifectas by Huff, Derrick Lane, and Ethan Wheeler. TFS held a 22-14 lead going into the half.

Highlands began to battle back late in the second, closing the gap with an 8-2 run. That run continued into the third, and was capped as a 12-2 run that had the game in the balance. Barker ended the drought with another clutch bucket, and a 3-point play by Huff got the Indians back in full control.

The Indians outpaced Highlands 27-16 in the second half to secure the win. Huff led all scorers with 17 points, including shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. He added 5 steals and 4 assists. Barker had 8 points and 4 rebounds, while Wheeler had 9 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals in the win. Jackson Savage added 5 points, Popham closed with 4, Lane had 3, Tate Turpin 2, and Bryson Perdue one. Perdue also collected 8 rebounds, while Savage had 7 steals to his credit.

The Indians move to 6-1 overall on the season, and return to the court on Thursday against Rabun Gap at home.
