Rowing club field trip brings reading assignment to life
Currently, Mrs. Jennifer Dunlap’s freshman English classes are reading Daniel James Brown’s The Boys in the Boat.
On May 4, students traveled to the Lake Lanier Rowing Club in Gainesville. The assistant coach for the facility led students on a tour to inspect the boats like the ones described in the book. Students were invited to transport one of the eight-man shells from the boathouse to the dock to see how to launch and board the skulls. After putting the boat away, students visited the weight room area and were shown how to correctly use rowing machines, like the ones used at LLRC for winter training.
Students also visited the race area to watch the preliminary canoe/kayak races for the Pan Am Games which is a qualifier for the Olympics. The Canadian team was on the water giving students more insight into how races were carried out. A picnic lunch and games brought the field trip to an end.
“It was a great trip and really gave us a new perspective and connection to what we have been reading,” said TFS student Marly Welborn.
