TFS varsity cross country team excels at North Ga Championships

The Tallulah Falls School varsity cross country team is picking up the pace as the season unfolds. Boys and girls performed well, despite the heat and humidity at the North Georgia Championships held at Jefferson’s Lamar Murphy Park on August 27, said TFS Athletic Director Scott Neal.

“The predawn bus ride, sans Starbucks, included drowsy eyes and snoring on the way to the race.  The all grass, flatish with a few inclines 5k, two-loop course hosted hundreds of dual-legged hearts pumping under a scattering of cirrus clouds slightly blocking UV rays yet allowing every droplet of southern humidity hospitality,” Neal said. “Hundreds of screaming fans filled the sides of the running paths, enthusing those enduring youth in those moments of diminishing effort.”

Sophomore Aaron Hughes of Demorest led TFS boys by placing 37th of 108 varsity division runners, running 18:21.60, a personal 5k record.   Twenty one seconds later in a personal record as well, fellow sophomore Caleb Griffis of Martin placed 50th while senior Michael Weidner of Clarkesville placed nine runners later in 19:00.55.  In the JV race, freshman Chris Geiger of Sautee Nacoochee placed 10th in 19:04.80 to earn a medal.  Freshman Caden Griffis of Martin ran 20:41.58 to place 48th of the 210 harriers.  Freshman John Nichols of Clarkesville (21:12.92), freshman Will Jackson of Clarkesville  (21:31.70), and sophomore Xing Fan of China (21;51.86) followed in 65th, 71st, and 81st, respectively.  Each ran a personal best.

Junior Perry Gresham of Clarkesville was the sole varsity female, placing 40th of 88 in 23:10.69.  TFS female JV runners placing in the top half included freshman Sophie Alexander of Sautee Nacoochee (20th in 24:45.94), freshman Laurel Smith of Clayton (41st in 26:20.09), and first year runner junior Reece Bates of Clarkesville (57th in 27:37.49).
