High museum a highlight for TFS art students

Seventh- and eighth-grade students enrolled in Cat Schappach’s art classes traveled to Atlanta’s High Museum of Art on Dec. 12.

As an extension of the Tallulah Falls School middle school art curriculum, the goal of the excursion was to help students understand the role of art through a broadened worldview.

“Each student was assigned to find a particular piece of art using a visual clue sent to them prior to the visit. Once they found their assigned piece they were to have a picture of themselves taken in front of the art,” Schappach said. “One goal was to have them look at many works and make comparisons. Another was to have them experience a variety of works, genres and masterworks. I saw many students looking very closely at impasto style works. We discussed the visit after; it was the first time several had been to an art museum.”

Romane Bearden is a featured artist currently at the High. Schappach saved this exhibit for the end of the tour so students and teachers could spend more time viewing his work.

Reflecting days later, eighth-grader Anna Grant of Demorest said the Sally Mann photography exhibit and the special Bearden exhibit were her favorite highlights.

Rylee Vandiver, a seventh-grader of Toccoa pondered the value of art in viewing a simple sculpture.

“It’s [seemingly] nothing, but it costs a lot if you see the value in it,” Vandiver said.
