Middle school girls cruise to win, boys B-Team drops close one to White Creek Christian

The TFS middle school girls basketball team, as well as the B-Team for the boys, opened the 2020-21 season against visiting White Creek Christian Academy on Thursday evening. The girls earned a big win, while the B-Team saw a narrow lead diminish in the fourth quarter.

GIRLS

The Lady Indians cruised to a 44-22 win, doubling up on visiting WCCA. Haygen James led all scorers with a game-high 19 points, including 15 in the first half. The girls led only 8-7 after the first quarter, as Breelyn Wood scored the first points of the season on a fast break layup.

TFS trailed only once, but only by one point and for just a moment. James in the second quarter stole the ball in a full-court press, and took it in for a layup to give Tallulah Falls an 11-10 lead that it wouldn't relinquish. It was part of a 6-0 run for the girls, and James later converted a three-point play with a basket and free throw after being fouled. The eighth grader scored 11 of her 19 points in the second quarter, as TFS took a 24-15 lead into the break.

The third quarter proved to be low-scoring, as the Lady Indians held White Creek to only two points, stretching the lead to 33-17 heading into the final quarter. It was there that the Lady Indians pulled away and secured a 22-point victory, thus doubling up WCCA.

Aside from James' 19 points, Chesney Tanksley scored ten. Millie Holcomb chipped in with eight points, while Wood finished with six, and Lizzie Huebner one. The girls are 1-0 to begin the season.

BOYS

The TFS middle school boys B-Team opened with a close 28-21 loss to White Creek Christian. After both teams played a tight first quarter, the score was knotted at six apiece. The visitors pulled away slightly, taking a 14-11 advantage into halftime.

The Indians played excellent on the defensive end in the third quarter, holding WCCA off the board. The boys did just enough offensively to snag a 15-14 lead going into the final stanza. White Creek then outscored TFS 14-5 the rest of the way to claim the 7-point lead.

Seventh grader Kaden Hunter led with six points for TFS, with his points coming off two 3-pointers in the opening quarter. Fellow seventh grader Rylee Smith scored five points, while William Nesmith played tenacious defense in his first middle school game.
