MS soccer sweeps White County, both teams posting shutouts

The TFS middle school boys and girls soccer teams posted clean sheets, playing nearly perfect soccer in season-opening wins over visiting White County on Wednesday evening. The boys took a 6-0 win, while the girls won 4-0.

BOYS

The Indians opened with a 6-0 win over White County on a night that nearly everything went according to plan.

"What a night - the atmosphere under the new lights was magical," says coach Chris Kafsky. "Great experience!"

The Indians quickly shed the nerves and came out firing, which led to early scoring chances. David Plaisted overtook an opponent and placed the game's first goal in the back of the net. Jared Mullis scored a bit later in the box to put the Indians up 2-0 at the half.

"The boys came out from the halftime discussion with a self-imposed message that the score was 0-0," adds Kafsky. "They quickly got to work and overwhelmed the White County defense."

Mullis hammered home another goal from the top of the box to start the onslaught. Clay Kafsky controlled the midfield and put away two more goals to stretch the lead to 5-0. Nolan Dalton put a nice touch off a through ball to KC Respress, who tallied the final goal of the night.

"The defense played incredibly well, covering each other and communicating to close down White County at the point of attack," says Kafsky. "I'm very pleased with the effort. We played team soccer and had fun doing it."

The Indians are quickly 1-0 on the season, and return to the pitch on March 1 against Stephens County at home.

GIRLS

The Lady Indians earned a 4-0 shutout of their own, marking a perfect start to the 2021 campaign.

Annelise Lance tallied three assists and a goal, while Gemma Farris had a pair of goals and Laurel Blake Kafsky had one.

Three goalkeepers combined for the clean sheet, including Farris, Kafsky and Allison York. Sixth grade defender Ryleigh Wilson started and played sweeper the entire game to assist in the shutout.

"We came out strong and ready to play the season opener in front of a large home crowd," says coach Laura Higbie. "Chemistry was quickly established and the connecting passes and communication followed."

Higbie was impressed with how her team gelled so quickly with a vast range of skillsets and ages.

"For there being such a difference in ages and skill level in the team, the crowd and our opponents had a hard time identifying those players who were less experienced or had never played at all," says Higbie. "We have some improvements to work on but I am incredibly proud at the way every single player gave 100% on the field. All 18 players received playing time and got to enjoy the win as a team. Can’t wait to see how we grow."

The Lady Indians are also 1-0 now on the young season, and play again on March 1 against Stephens County at home.

GOALS:

2 - Gemma Farris (2)
1 - Annelise Lance (1)
1 - Laurel Blake Kafsky (1)
