Season Preview: Cheerleading

The 2021-22 basketball season presents another opportunity for those who keep the players and teams motivated - the cheerleaders - to foster school spirit during games.

The varsity squad, coached by Kim Popham, consists of a dozen girls who are set for another great season. Seniors Shelby Ann Brightwell and Ava Wehrstein have been part of the program for years, and will look to lead the squad throughout the season.

Junior members include Mei Hui De Velasco, Cassidy Hayes, Isabella Jones, Madi Ramey, and Ruichen “Sarah” Zhang. Sophomores Jane Ibemere, Lucy Ladd, and Susie Sun are joined by freshmen Mallory Higgins and Brooklyn Reed to round out the team.

The middle school team is guided by Chrissy Van Hooser, as she takes over the team this year. The group contains eighth graders Elena Edenfield and Sarah Wilkinson, seventh graders Sky Belangia, Callee Elrod, and Haylen McGugan, as well as new sixth graders Paisley Elrod, Addy McClellon, Ellie Shaw, and CaRin Swinton.

“We have nine cheerleaders this year, with three returning - Sarah Wilkinson, Callee Elrod, and Haylen McGugan,” says Van Hooser. “We will cheer at all home basketball games. We are working hard at practice learning cheers and routines. I am excited to work with this great group of girls.”

The first middle school basketball game at home is November 11 against Riverside Military Academy, with the first JV/varsity game at home is a scrimmage against Rabun Gap on November 9.
