MS girls, boys grab road wins at Woody Gap

 
 

The middle school girls and boys A-Team traveled to Woody Gap on Thursday evening, taking a pair of wins back home. For the girls, it marked the first win of the season, while the A-Team evened its overall record.

GIRLS

The Lady Indians earned their first win of the season in a 30-12 final on Thursday. Identical 8-2 first and second quarters had the girls up 16-4 going into the half. TFS outscored Woody Gap in each quarter, including 8-4 in the fourth to nail down the win.

In the first, Charlotte Stafford and LB Kafsky both had buckets as part of a 7-0 run that set the pace early. Abby McCoy and Lupita Carrillo scored in the second to pad the lead up to 12-2, and a Kafsky fast break layup made it 14-4. Moments later, Finlee Ridlehoover's bucket gave the Lady Indians a sizable 16-4 lead.

The third quarter was highlighted by another Kafsky basket, as well as a Gracie Gunter buzzer-beating fastbreak layup to give TFS a 22-8 advantage. Emily Cai's putback in the fourth stretched the lead to 28-10, and TFS secured the victory from there.

Eight different girls scored, led by Cai's eight points and Kafsky's seven. Carrillo and Stafford had four points eachi, while Gunter, McCoy, and Ridlehoover all had two apiece. Emily Shoemaker added one. Cai also led the efforts in the paint, collecting 18 rebounds, including 12 offensive boards. She also had eight steals. Kafsky had five assists and two steals, and Carrillo hauled in nine rebounds.

The girls move to 1-1 on the season.

BOYS

The Indians led from wire to wire, beating Woody Gap 45-19. Macade Huff dropped six points in the first and three steals in the opening quarter, which included a 7-0 run. By the end of the quarter, TFS was up 9-4. An Asa Popham bucket and deep jumper by Ethan Wheeler in the second stretched the Indians' lead to 15-10 going into the locker room. 

The third quarter featured TFS capitalizing more on Woody Gap miscues, outscoring the home team 20-5 in the third to take a large 35-15 lead into the final quarter. From there, TFS outscored Woody Gap 10-4 the rest of the way.

Nine Indians got in on the scoring, as Huff had a game-high 18 points, followed by Wheeler's seven. Elijah Barker, Popham, and Jackson Savage had four, while Kaden Hunter, Derrick Lane, Bryson Perdue, and Tate Turpin had two each. Perdue and Barker both did the heavy lifting inside, as both finished with eight rebounds apiece. Savage had six rebounds, five steals, two blocks, and two assists as well, while Huff (five steals), Popham (four steals, three assists), and Lane (four steals, two assists) were making plays all over the court.

The boys are now 2-2 on the season.
