Top spellers emerge during annual competition

Two dozen middle school students brought their A-game to the school-level spelling bee held Jan. 5.

After the competition,  two champion spellers emerged – eighth-grader Bryson Perdue of Tiger and seventh-grader Delaney Johnson of Toccoa, along with alternates eighth-graders Charlotte Stafford of Clarkesville and Parker Seaman of Tallulah Falls.

Participants from grades five through eight performed exceptionally well in their own grade-level spelling bee prior to the school-level competition, according to English teacher Hannah Gibson.

“When the 24 grade-level champion spellers gathered for our school spelling bee, the four winners dominated by spelling words like ‘Yom Kippur’ and ‘slurve,’” Gibson said. “I was very impressed by every participant's score and show of professionalism.”

The top spellers will prepare for the Georgia Independent School Association Area Spelling Bee Round No. 1, set for Feb. 3. If the champions score in the top 20%, they will advance to Rounds 2 and 3 later next month, Gibson said.
