Season Recap: Precision Rifle

After winning 10 matches a season ago and returning a young but talented roster, it was no surprise that the team built off last year's run with a second straight top-10 finish at the GHSA State Championships.

The depth of the roster showed early and often, as lone senior Jue Wang consistently was a top shooter. Every athlete on the team improved their craft, making for one of the top area teams in terms of talent.

TFS won its first four matches, taking on Riverside, North Gwinnett, Lithonia, and North Forsyth. It wasn't until a loss to Lumpkin County - the eventual Area Champions - on January 26 that the rifle team took a loss.

From there, it was another big win streak. In the second half of the season, TFS beat Buford and Dawson County prior to the Area 6 Sectionals. Competing at home, the team edged North Forsyth in their relay. In the ensuing Area 6 Championship match, TFS finished as Runner-Up for a second straight season, a tremendous accomplishment when considering the size of the other schools in the area.

The State Sectionals included a date with Class 7A Westlake, and TFS had a tremendous showing with an 1138 -857 win in which Leah Rogers shot a 290 for a second straight match. Chloe Erwin fired a 289 in that match as well. The team then had a similar output with a 1137-1102 win over Glynn Academy in the State Semifinals on March 17. Wang's 287 led the team, and Joseph McGahee also had a 287. That win clinched another State Championship appearance for TFS, this time at the University of North Georgia on April 1.

In the Championship, Marc Crotta this time led the efforts with a 287 as the team finished 10th overall with an 1137. The team's record rounded out to 11-1.

The season accomplishments included Wang tying the school record with a 292 in a 3x10 individual match, with the senior doing so in the opening match against Riverside. Tallulah Falls' 1155 score in the Area 6 Sectionals bested the school record by six points. Wang (290), Chloe Erwin (290), McGahee (288), and Rogers (287) earned the top score.

Wang will graduate this spring, while the team continues to show plenty of promise for the future. McGahee, Crotta, Erwin, Rogers, Kylee Loudermilk, Ethan Simmons, Zeek Pruitt, and Yewon Jun are all underclassmen seeking to build off the winning foundation in place by coaches Katie Keister and Tim and Kerry Stamey.
