MS Indians close season with tie, win at Lumpkin

The MS Indians, fresh out of Spring Break, traveled to Lumpkin County to finish off the 2023 season. Tallulah Falls tied 8-8 in the opener before winning 6-1 in the final contest.

TFS went up 2-0 quickly in the opening game, highlighted by a Reilly Cox RBI single. Lumpkin cut the deficit in half with a run in its half. Tallulah Falls scored 4 runs in the second to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Garrett Dorsey had a 2-run single and Asa Popham a 2-run inside-the-park homerun to dead center.

However, Lumpkin County scored twice in the third and had a 4-run fourth to tie the game at 7 apiece. TFS had just got its seventh run in the top of the fourth when William NeSmith scored on a wild pitch. The Indians regained the lead in the top of the fifth when Fenn NeSmith scampered home on a wild pitch. Lumpkin County got across the tying run, but left the go-ahead run stranded on third to end the contest in a tie.

Popham had 2 hits, and started the game on the mound. He went 3 innings and gave up 2 earned runs while striking out 3. Jack Greene came in late, and went 1.2 innings while striking out 2 and giving up no earned runs. Ryder Cantrell also had 2 hits in the opening game.

In the finale, Drew Barron pitched a gem, giving up a single hit and 3 walks across 4.1 shutout innings and striking out 9 batters to earn the win. Ryan Anderson pitched the final frame, allowing an unearned run.

The Indians got a run in the first on an error that plated William NeSmith. Anderson singled in the second and came across on a wild pitch, making it 2-0. In the third, Dorsey also scored on a wild pitch before an RBI single by Greene pushed it to 4-0. TFS added a pair of fifth-inning runs for insurance, as Barron singled home Dorsey in his final middle school at-bat. The final run came on an error, and TFS nailed down the 6-1 victory. TFS had only 5 hits in the game, but also worked several walks and took advantage of miscues by Lumpkin.

The Indians close the season with a 4-4-1 overall record.
