Sweet 16 Preview: Boys Soccer

The Indians have had by far the best season in school history. After a first-ever region title and now the first-ever playoff win out of the way (thanks to a 4-0 win over Darlington in the opening round), TFS is ready for more after improving to 16-0 on the season.

The state's top-ranked team now has a ridiculous 112-3 scoring count. While the goal total raises the eyebrows, as it should, the defense can not be overlooked. The unit has secured 13 clean sheets this season, and players such as Jake Wehrstein and Brit Shaw have been sensational there on the back line, taking much pressure off stellar keeper Kelton Reynolds.

Austin Ball's 39 goals, along with Jake Hall (26) and Landon Hall (11) have been leading the offense. Clay Kafsky, Simeon Conjagic, Luis Varona Pastor, and others are also contributing on that end. You never know which player(s) are going to come through there, as evidenced in the first round win where Koen Eller and Wehrstein notched goals.

The path gets tougher here, as the Indians play host to Whitefield Academy, the #7-ranked team in the state. TFS has beaten a pair of ranked opponents this season, including Mt. Vernon, who has played Whitefield. Mt. Vernon beat Whitefield in a PK shootout following two overtime periods. The Whitefield Academy Wolf Pack are 9-8-1 overall, and were the 3-seed from 6-A DI, and carry a 38-25 goal count. That equetes to 2.1 goals per game and just 1.4 allowed. The Wolf Pack have won two straight coming in, including a 3-1 win in their first round match with Social Circle. Still, that win moves them to only 3-4-3 in away matches.

Whitefield holds close, even in defeats. To that end, it has three losses by a single goal, and have held opponents scoreless six times this season.
