TFS Upper and Middle School Science Olympiad Teams Compete at Regional Tournaments

The upper and middle school Science Olympiad teams competed at the regional finals tournaments, Saturday, March 2. Science teacher Ashley Dumas coaches both teams. She traveled with the middle school team, while science teacher Heather Henriques traveled with the upper school team.

The middle school Science Olympiad team competed in their first-ever regional finals tournament at the Jackson County Georgia Youth Science Technology Center. This tournament included 18 teams from the Athens and Atlanta area with over 150 competitors. “Although the team was small, the results were mighty,” said coach Dumas.

Every member had at least one top-five result. Seventh graders Fenn NeSmith and assistant Henry Dumas took first place in Tower. Dumas, with assistant NeSmith, took second place in Flight. Dumas also had a second-place finish in Optics. Eighth-grader Steven Jackson took second place in Roller Coaster, Seventh-graders Maeve Hatcher and Quinlan Flanders took fourth in Write It Do It, and eighth-grader Reilly Cox took fifth in Wind Power. “Cox showed extreme determination and character when his event experienced technical difficulties, and he still did a fantastic job,” said coach Dumas.

The upper school team competed against 15 teams from the Atlanta and North East Georgia Area in several content events. The event was held at the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega. “They represented TFS exceptionally well,” said coach Dumas. Two top-five finishes highlighted the event. Juniors Marina Dumas and Mia Hamon took second place in Anatomy, and sophomore Emily Cai took fifth place in Fossils. Other members of the team were freshmen Josh Lander (Astronomy), Agnes Hogan (Forestry), and Megan Prince (Ecology). “The team is looking forward to growing next year and competing in even more events,” said coach Dumas.
