Sara Bailey - Track & Field

Sophomore Sara Bailey ran her best races of the year at the 2023 State Track & Field Championships, held at Barron Stadium in Rome. She led off the 4x800 relay with a 2:37.7 split, handed off to Kailyn Neal, who passed the baton to Meredith Orr, who got it in the hands of anchor Molly Mitchell. The quartet placed seventh in 10:45.83, a 40-second season best! A day later, Sara ran her fastest split of the season on the 4x400 relay preliminaries to help advance the relay to the Saturday finals. That allowed teammate Mitchell to rest for the finals to help the team to victory for the last race of the season. The first thing Mitchell did after the race was walk to the middle of the infield in front of the stadium stands, point to Bailey, and mouth, 'this was you!' -coach Scott Neal

Sam Ketch - Track & Field

Junior team captain Sam Ketch started the state track & field championship meet with a 140' discus throw, good enough to make the finals. After a 127' mishap, he fouled twice, then dug deep to fling the 1.6kg disc to a school record twice in a row, surpassing Karim Dembele's ten-year-old mark (150-8 and 151-6) to place third and score six team points at the pinnacle meet of the season. -coach Scott Neal
