Indians of the Week: October 30-November 4

TFS has named the Indians of the Week for the week of October 30-November 4. This week's selections are Josie Chesser and Gavin Simmons for high school, and Brody Irvin and Veronica VerBerkmoes for middle school. MORE INDIANS OF THE WEEK

Josie Chesser - Cross Country

Junior Josie Chesser saved her best 2023 cross country race for the State Championships. Finishing one place behind teammate Avery Keim as well as being an in-race inspiration for Carsyn Griffis and Dani Prince, who both ran personal records on the challenging course, Josie ran 1:18 better than her season best and crossed the finish line with her best state course time (22:52.94) in 32nd place of 160 competing harriers, helping the team as the TFS #2 runner to finish 7th overall - the best in TFS girls cross country history. Josie processed the last few weeks of the season with aplomb, resolve, and lasting memories while contributing to the life of the team with significance; so proud of her! -coach Scott Neal

Gavin Simmons - Cross Country

Freshman Gavin Simmons' season finale race at state is just what is dreamed of when preparing for a cross country season - run your best when it counts while laying a foundation of future opportunities. He ran 21:30.32 for the Carrollton 5k state course, a full minute personal record, working his arms on the hills better than ever. Gavin provided an inspiring story to the team at the spaghetti dinner, then followed that up with a deep, internal gnawing to utilize strategy, strength of mind, and team fortitude on the course when the legs were most aching, heart rate maxing out, and lungs heaving oxygen to weary muscles and an undefeatable mind. Gavin is a true distance runner, someone who progressively can log miles and miles and miles; I suspect he will eventually log more than anyone in the history of TFS XC. -coach Scott Neal

Brody Irvin - Swimming

Brody Irvin is a leader on our middle school swim team. He consistently works hard at practice and it's evident based on his performance the past two meets. In the Fall Frenzy meet in Gainesville Saturday, Brody had a PR in both of his individual events placing 4th in the 50 freestyle and 4th in the 50 backstroke helping lead his team to a 2nd place finish overall. -coach Tamara Griffis

Veronica VerBerkmoes - Swimming

Veronica Verberkmoes had a stellar performance this past weekend at the Fall Frenzy Invitational leading her team to a 1st place finish in the 100 Individual Medley and 3rd in the 100 freestyle. Veronica's commitment in the off-season so far is paying dividends. We can't wait to see her progression throughout the season. -coach Tamara Griffis
