6th Grade Curriculum

Core Subjects

Math 6

Sixth Grade Math is designed to enhance the developing math skills of the young middle school student.  Various concepts and problem-solving strategies will be visited throughout the course.  Sixth-grade students will begin with a review of the properties of the different mathematics operations and order of operations.  They will then explore decimals and fractions, begin to evaluate expressions and equations and become more adept at solving more complex math problems.  During the second semester, students in Math 6 will complete units of study involving ratio and percent, integers and rational numbers, coordinate planes, geometry and measurement and analyzing and graphing data. 

The utilization of classroom practice, technology and real-life applications of the many ways these mathematical concepts are consistently used will provide students various opportunities for learning and deepening their math knowledge.  Hands-on activities and projects will also be used, helping students expand the use of mathematics skill, build confidence and increase mathematical fluency.

World Geography 6

In Sixth Grade World Geography, students journey through a comprehensive study of people, places and cultures around the world.  Students will participate in units of study containing major themes linked to the six essential elements of geography: 1) The world in spatial terms, 2) Places and regions, 3) Physical systems, 4) Human systems, 5) Environment and society and 6) Uses of geography.  The topics of study in World Geography 6 will include Earth’s physical geography and map reading.  Within these topics, students will explore the past and present physical geography, cultures and lifestyles of The United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Australia, Africa and Asia.

World Geography 6 involves active learning through projects, frequent use of technology and amazing virtual field trips that allow students to truly experience the areas of the world that they study.  As students complete this course, they will gain a foundational knowledge of geography that they can build upon as they progress through their educational career.  They will also have a better understanding of the huge role geography plays in the world in which we live.

Science 6

This course assists students in becoming lifelong learners who grow in their understanding of the world.  The nature of science includes these concepts: scientific explanations are based on logical thinking; are subject to rules of evidence; are consistent with observational, inferential, and experimental evidence; are open to rational critique; and are subject to refinement and change with the addition of new scientific evidence.  Through the sixth grade science course, students will develop a deeper understanding of science and the scientific process through several topics including: Matter and Its interactions, Motion and Stability, Energy, Waves and Their Applications, Ecosystems, Earth’s Place in the Universe, Earth’s Systems, Earth and Human Activity, and Engineering Design. 

The best way to learn science is by actively participating in science. Students will become more fluent in science through reading, writing and speaking.  They will also enhance their knowledge and understanding through a variety of field experiences designed to guide students to make observations, ask questions, test solutions, give feedback, and make modifications. 

English 6

In English 6, students will begin to experience more sophisticated pieces of literature for study and analysis.  Students will complete units of study in which they will be reading both informational and literary texts.  This course will also guide students to acquire and use new vocabulary.  Students will also complete units of study to improve writing skills which will include working on grammar and development of more complex sentences.  These skills will be utilized as students begin to produce larger pieces of writing such as narratives, argumentative pieces, informational pieces, and both formal and informal responses to literature.  Students will also participate in the Accelerated Reader program to continue to enhance their reading and comprehension skills. 

The student will work in both whole and small group settings as well as individually to examine literary works and to create their own pieces.  Various projects and activities will be used throughout the course to provide opportunities for all students to gain a deeper understanding and enjoyment of reading and writing. 

Exploratory

Introduction to Music 6

This course is offered to students in 6th grade regardless of previous musical experiences. The course allows students to explore and experience the importance of rhythm in all types of music from different cultures, periods and genres. The curriculum emphasizes the basics of reading music and music theory. Students will participate in activities and lessons, allowing them the opportunity to explore different forms of music, including singing, playing instruments, listening to varying types of music and creating musical lyrics and rhythms.

Introduction to Art 6

This elective is a six-week course. The lessons this it includes are targeted toward focused study and rigorous participation in making sense of art. An increased understanding of fine arts will be developed through critical and abstract thinking. Students will be guided through a variety of exercises to assist them in expressing themselves creatively and artistically through different mediums. As students participate in the activities and projects provided in this course, they will begin to develop as individual artists through discussion and critique.  In this course, students will also complete a unit in which they will briefly examine architecture as art and how it has made a mark throughout history.  

Physical Education

Physical Education is a semester-long course that is designed to promote physical activity, teamwork, self-motivation, self- discipline and increased development of body movement and athletic ability. Students are beginning to mature in their ability to perform various athletic tasks and movements. In this course, students will demonstrate more mature motor movement, perform more complex rhythmic skill and apply movement forms to developing motor skills. Along with athletic talent and increased motor skills, Physical Education focuses on good sportsmanship, building students’ confidence in their abilities and their willingness to try new things. Students will improve fitness levels through cardiovascular conditioning, general body strength and flexibility.

Enrichment 6

Positive communication skills are necessary for student success. This class will focus on key listening, speaking and non-verbal skills that will help to provide a solid, life-long foundation. Special attention will be given to public speaking, as well as giving and receiving feedback.
