MS Indians survive upset bid to reach Tri-State Championship

The MS Indians survived a strong shooting effort by Rabun Gap, taking a 34-31 win in the Tri-State semifinals at home on Wednesday.

TFS got as good a start as could be scripted, as Asa Popham scored seven points in 30 seconds of play, hitting a 3-pointer and a pair of jumpers off steals. He scored again to get all nine of the game's first points. Later in the first, Popham was good from a couple feet behind the arc, as the Indians held a comfortable 16-6 lead.

A 6-0 run for Rabun Gap on deep triples got the Eagles back into the game. Lincoln Hicks and Brantley Addison came up with key buckets, the latter of whom scored on a beautiful euro step to get to the rim. Rabun Gap hit another 3-pointer to get within 18-15, but the Indians had a 24-16 advantage at the half.

From there, the offense stalled, scoring just 10 points in the second half. It was still enough to get past the visitors and into the Tri-State Championship game. Popham led with 17 points, while Hicks had 10, Addison four, and Woods Irvin three.

The Indians are now 13-4, and take on Towns County Saturday in the Tri-State Championship game.
