Season Preview: Baseball

This could be the most depth the Indians have had in program history. In year four of Justin Pollock’s tenure at TFS, the baseball team has been building up to a team like the 2024 version. A pair of playoff appearances in the past three seasons have been the building blocks.

Now, coming off a 12-win season and returning eight starters, Tallulah Falls has depth that has been hard to come by, especially on the mound.

To that end, Chase Pollock, who set the single-season wins record of six last season to go with a nice 3.85 ERA, will be the ace of the staff. Behind him is Cole Bonitatibus, who posted three wins and a 4.20 ERA. Pollock had 30 strikeouts and Bonitatibus 50.

“We've got a lot of experienced guys who compete and fill up the zone,” adds Pollock. “Cole, Rohajae Pinder, Chase, and Andrew Skvarka are all back and all threw 30+ innings for us last season. Caden Walker has come on really strong as well and newcomer Diego Gonzalez is also a very talented arm.”

On the other side, the offense is coming off a season in which it had 171 runs scored (2nd-most in school history). While Region 8-A Player of the Year Frankey Moree (2nd Team All-State) is gone to the next level, the lineup still returns starters Danny Grant (22 R, 14 SB), Caden Walker (1 HR, 7 2B, 15 SB), Zaiden Cox (8 2B, 11 SB), and Rohajae Pinder (1 HR, 21 RBI) among others.

“We have competitive depth at every position,” states Pollock. “We expect Caden to be at the top of the lineup and guys like Danny, Rohajae, Ashton, and Diego all to be somewhere in the middle of the order. Overall we have a good balance of speed, power and guys who can handle the bat.”

The goal for this team is laid out by the staff.

“Our expectations are high for this upcoming season,” says Pollock. “This group is committed to each other and committed to growing everyday. If we stay focused on that, we know that the score will take care of itself.”

The Indians will take on Hart County February 8 on the road in a non-counting scrimmage, and officially open the campaign with a visit to Franklin County on February 12.

Meanwhile, the JV baseball team takes the diamond this spring under coach Kyle Dampier. The Indians last season went 10-3, starting out 8-0 while rolling past every opponent. After a bit of a tough stretch, the Indians rebounded to outscore West Oak (SC) 24-2 in a season-ending double-header. Last year's team averaged nearly eight runs per game against a little more than three allowed.

The 2024 Indians will be hoping for more of the same success. Though most of last year's JV standouts are now on varsity, the roster has several up-and-coming talents. Juniors Robert Grant and Justin Smith will be featured, as well as a large sophomore group of players such as Brantley Allen, Dylan Brooks, Merrick Carnes, Wyatt Dorsey, Griffin Harkness, and Jackson Savage. Freshman who will get valuable experience include Drew Barron, Matthew Calhoun, Jordan Miller, and William NeSmith. Eighth-graders Garrett Dorsey and Asa Popham will get some appearances on JV as well.

The early part of the JV calendar is flooded with away games, as the Indians play seven of their first eight games on the road. That is followed by a streak of seven home games in a row. The season-opener is slated for February 13 at West Hall, with the first home game on February 28 against Franklin County.
